Connacht kennel watching & badger sett surveying
**KENNEL WATCHING AND BADGER SETT INVESTIGATION**
16/10/21
This morning, we decided to keep the ball rolling from last week. Most of the Connacht hunts have yet to begin the main season, meaning it was back to the early cubbing shift for us.
We arrived around 5:30am at one of the kennels, full of coffee and determined to catch a cub Hunt if one was to take place. We waited until it got light, but by 8:30am there was still no movement, and we were sure they hadn't gone out by that point.
Happy in the knowledge that there was no hunting going on that morning, we decided to head to the local woods to see if we could identify any live badger setts, as well as any potential interference from humans.
We spent about 2 hours scything our way through the undergrowth. We managed to follow some trails to two active setts, which was great to see. Firstly, there was no evidence of interference from anyone, and it looked active, with fresh scat discovered nearby. It was a great education for our new sabs, all experienced under lovely sunrise.
We heard some gunshots in the distance at some stage - there was nothing that could be done from where we were but it just goes to show that hunting is rife in Ireland, and our presence is necessary to document and put an end to this wildlife abuse.
